These are the Best Wineries to Visit in Washington State

Updated: Jan 11

Washington State's wine scene spans much of the southern tip of the state, but many of its producers are scattered across the state. Here are our favorite wineries who showcase the best that Washington State has to offer.

The lineup of wines from a tasting at Devison Vintners

Devison Vintners

Devison Vintners, located in Walla Walla, is one of the newer wineries in the valley, and stands out because of the expertise of winemaker Peter Devison. Known for his expressive and balanced wines, Devison's wines shines with selections like the Above the Flood Rhone Blend, which exhibits the classic Rhone notes like cured meat, herbs, blackberry and pepper. Devison is particularly impressive because the entire operation is run by he, his wife and the occasional intern, yet all of their wines would be hard to distinguish from their old world counterparts. The tasting room is just a table set up in their shared production facility and is a casual conversation with Peter himself. As such, you get an amazingly in depth exploration into each wine, and can learn how Peter made it and what inspired him.

Dillon Cellars

Situated south of Walla Walla, Dillon Cellars illustrates Marc Dillon Leahy's expert understanding of Washington's terroir. Their small-batch wines, like their Calyptra Chardonnay, offer a glimpse into the nuanced flavors of the region. The Chardonnay is a harmonious blend of apple and vanilla leading to a crisp and minerally finish. The tasting room is a small area just in front of their production facility so you get the chance to meet the winery staff (including the winemaker Marc) as they pass through. It is a casual but very intimate and authentic tasting experience that mirrors the personal touch that Marc brings to his wines.

Force Majeure is technically just across the border in Oregon, but they are a Washington producer through and through. They stand as a beacon of innovative winemaking under the guidance of winemaker Todd Alexander. They produce excellent Bordeaux blends and Cabernets as well as Syrah and Rhone blends. Their Walla Walla Estate Syrah is a standout, featuring robust red fruit flavors and spicy undertones that characterize the region's terroir. From the outside, the tasting room appears to be an unassuming former home (or perhaps warehouse). But once you step inside you are met with a beautiful modern farmhouse aesthetic, which offers a luxurious tasting experience in a setting that's as remarkable as their wines.
