Pro Tips for The Rocky Mountain National Park Alpine Lakes Hike:

  1. Park Pass: This hike requires a Bear Lake road timed entry pass. These typically sell out months in advance, however they release about 150 passes for 4 different times slots the day before exactly at 5pm. Make sure you've got your credit card and account set up and ready to go. You'll need to get the Time Entry+ pass. You can get a pass here.

  2. Start Early: Begin your hike early to avoid crowds and ensure convenient parking.

  3. Pack Essentials: Bring enough water, snacks, and wear suitable hiking gear, considering the variable weather conditions. It's not a terrible hike, so if you pack light you should be fine.

  4. Tread Lightly: Follow Leave No Trace principles to preserve the environment and the beauty of RMNP.

  5. Photography Equipment: Carry your camera or smartphone for capturing the mesmerizing landscapes and memories.

Unveiling the Best Hike in Rocky Mountain National Park and the Natural Splendors of the Alpine Lakes:

Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) is a magnificent tapestry of mountains, lakes, and diverse ecosystems in the heart of Colorado, offering spectacular adventures and panoramic vistas. "The Alpine Lakes" itinerary is the epitome of what RMNP has to offer, comprising five stunning bodies of water: Nymph, Dream, Emerald Lakes, and Lake Haiyaha, each boasting its unique charm and breathtaking scenery. The cool thing about this itinerary is that it can be modified to fit your timeframe and you can also extend it to visit The Loch (an extra 4 miles round trip) and Mills Lake (an extra 3.5 miles round trip).

Lake #1: Nymph Lake

Lake #2: Dream Lake

Lake #3: Emerald Lake

Lake #4: Lake Haiyaha

Alpine Lake #1: Nymph Lake

Begin your journey at Bear Lake Trailhead. A relatively short hike will lead you to the serene Nymph Lake, renowned for its floating lily pads. The initial elevation is felt as the trail is steep, but short. Here, capture the early morning reflections of Hallett Peak on its calm waters.

Alpine Lake #2: Dream Lake

Continuing from Nymph, the trail ascends gradually through a wooded path. Upon reaching Dream Lake, you're rewarded with magnificent views of Hallett Peak and Flattop Mountain which serve as a dramatic backdrop.

Alpine Lake #3: Emerald Lake

Emerald Lake concludes the traditional Lakes hike, ensconced in high cliffs and adorned with emerald-green waters and a myriad of wildflowers. Take some time to have snack here but watch out for chipmunks they are very friendly, but will try and steal your food.

Alpine Lake #4: Lake Haiyaha

After visiting Emerald Lake you are going to retrace your steps back to fork at Dream Lake and then take the South route up the switchbacks. This is one of my favorite views in the park as you can see for miles and miles.

Veering off to the secluded Lake Haiyaha, hikers encounter rocky landscapes and ancient boulders surrounding the deep-blue lake, portraying a mystique and wild essence, characteristic of RMNP's untamed beauty. The hike to Haiyaha involves navigating some rocky terrain, but the views of Otis, Hallett, and Flattop peaks reflecting on its dark waters make it a worthy detour.
