The Chateau d'Yquem Legacy

Château d’Yquem’s legacy dates back to 1593, when it was acquired by the Sauvage d’Yquem family. Over the centuries, the estate has seen illustrious visitors, from Thomas Jefferson to various European royalty, all drawn to its extraordinary wines. In 1855, during the Exposition Universelle de Paris, Château d’Yquem was awarded the unique classification of Premier Cru Supérieur, the highest accolade, solidifying its status as the king of Sauternes. When the 1855 Bordeaux Classification was established, Château d’Yquem was recognized as the single most expensive bottle of wine, significantly surpassing the prices of the red first growths like Château Latour and Château Lafite.

Fun Fact: Thomas Jefferson’s favorite vintage of Chateau d'Yquem was 1784.

The Unique Terroir

The magic of Château d’Yquem begins with its unique terroir. The estate spans 113 hectares, of which about 100 hectares are planted with vines. The vineyard is perched on a rare mix of gravel, clay, and limestone soils, which contribute to the complexity and depth of the wine. The microclimate is equally crucial; morning mists from the Ciron and Garonne rivers promote the development of Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot, which is essential for producing the concentrated, luscious sweetness that defines Yquem’s wines.

A Commitment to Excellence

Visiting Château d'Yquem, one is immediately struck by the meticulous attention to detail that permeates every aspect of winemaking. The harvest is an exacting process, conducted grape by grape over multiple passes through the vineyard. This ensures that only the most perfectly botrytized grapes are selected, sometimes requiring up to 13 separate passes through the vines to pick the grapes at their peak of perfection. This painstaking approach results in incredibly low yields, but it is essential for achieving the wine’s unparalleled quality.

The winemaking process is equally rigorous. Fermentation occurs in new oak barrels, and the wine is aged for up to 36 months before it is deemed ready for bottling. This extended aging process allows the wine to develop its characteristic complexity and depth, with layers of honey, apricot, and exotic spice emerging over time.

However, since being acquired by LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton), subtle touches of luxury and modernity have been seamlessly integrated. These enhancements blend the château's traditional charm with contemporary sophistication, reflecting LVMH's commitment to preserving the estate's legacy while infusing it with a touch of opulence. The result is a space that exudes both historic significance and luxurious beauty, making it a perfect environment for aging some of the world's finest wines.
