Summary

Château L'Évangile is a prestigious winery situated in the Pomerol appellation, a renowned winegrowing area on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, France. This illustrious estate is nestled between two other esteemed properties, Château Petrus and Château Cheval Blanc, placing it in the heart of a region famed for producing some of the world's most exquisite and sought-after wines.

With a rich history that dates back to the 18th century, Château L'Évangile has established a reputation for crafting elegant and deeply complex wines. Its origins can be traced to 1741 when it was known as Fazilleau. Over the centuries, it has seen a series of ownership changes, each contributing to the development and refinement of the estate's winemaking practices. The property was acquired by the Ducasse family in the middle of the 19th century and remained in their care until 1990 when it became part of the prestigious portfolio of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite).

The Rothschild touch brought significant investment and innovation to Château L'Évangile, enabling modernization of the winemaking facilities while preserving the château's tradition and respect for its unique terroir. Today, the estate spans approximately 22 hectares (about 54 acres) with a grape composition of roughly 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc—a blend that typifies the Pomerol denomination, known for wines that are rich, sensual, and capable of aging gracefully.

The terroir of Château L'Évangile is exceptional, featuring a mixture of gravel, sand, and the famous Pomerol clay that provides excellent drainage and contributes to the concentrated flavor profile of its wines. The clay is particularly noteworthy because it retains moisture during dry spells, which helps the vines maintain their vigor and contributes to the distinctive character of the wine.

The vineyard management practices are meticulous, with careful attention to sustainable agriculture. Harvesting is conducted manually, ensuring that only the best grapes are selected for production. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with the estate using a combination of traditional wooden vats and more modern stainless steel to provide a controlled environment for the wine.

The wines of Château L'Évangile are known for their powerful bouquet, full-bodied texture, and layers of flavor, including dark fruits, truffle, and hints of chocolate or espresso, developed during the aging process. The aging typically occurs in new French oak barrels for 18 months, imparting a subtle toastiness and further complexity to the wines.

Visitors to Château L'Évangile can expect an experience that is as luxurious as the wines they produce. From the elegant architecture of the estate to the carefully curated tasting rooms, guests are invited to indulge in the opulence and tradition that is intrinsic to the world of fine Bordeaux wines. Whether you are a seasoned connoisseur or a curious enthusiast, Château L'Évangile offers a window into the artistry and excellence that have made Pomerol wines a cornerstone of luxury viticulture.
